What is Mediation?

At Family Mediation Matters we believe that mediation is the best way to resolve all family issues. Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process in which parties in conflict generate their own resolution under the impartial guidance of professional mediators. The process rests on the premise that sharing one’s needs and concerns with the other party yields mutual understanding.
Participants sit down with the mediator(s) for two or more sessions to identify issues that cause conflict. They then work through these issues by engaging in safe and thoughtful discussions. Participants hear and understand one another and, in most cases, arrive at a satisfying outcome. The mediation typically ends with an agreement, written or verbal. By building respect and trust, mediation helps participants resolve present conflicts and prevent future ones.
